When people search

Open house season starts in August.

MFG Day falls on the first Friday in October, when manufacturers across the US open their doors for plant tours. Searches for “manufacturing day” rose to 2,900 in September and 3,600 in October 2025, then fell to 260 in November. If you take part to find apprentices and new hires, the page about your open house should be live by August, when searches start to climb again.

Google and AI answers

Who answers today when your customers ask.

Engineers and buyers settle the grade before they ask for a quote. Five of the eight sources in Google’s AI Overview came from metals distributors and product makers, and three of the top five results came from a metals supplier, a fabrication platform and an equipment maker.

The levers

Five levers for manufacturers and job shops.

Industrial buyers decide slowly and as a team. If you answer the questions from engineering, purchasing and quality well, you’re on the shortlist before the RFQ goes out.

Shop floor lead and a young machinist going over a technical drawing at the workbench
01

Explain the processes you run.

Anyone who wants to know when machining beats molding, which finish suits which alloy, or how Type II and Type III anodizing differ is looking for an explanation. Write it, and readers land at the shop that does the work.

EvidenceAI Overview for “type 2 vs type 3 anodizing” on October 5, 2026: seven of eight sources were manufacturers, finishing companies and manufacturing platforms.

02

Reference pages for standards and charts.

Tolerances, GD&T symbols, gauges and thread charts are things engineers look up again and again. A good reference page gets bookmarked, forwarded and cited by AI answers. Explain in your own words and add what your shop has learned, so the page is more than one more copy of the same table.

Evidence“gd&t” 14,800, “tap drill chart” 12,100, “sheet metal gauge chart” 6,600 searches a month. Under the gauge chart, Google showed questions like “Which is thicker, 14 gauge or 16 gauge sheet metal?” on October 5, 2026.

03

Compliance topics from your shop’s point of view.

General questions about CMMC, ITAR or AS9100 are answered by agencies, auditors and law firms. What they mean for your customers’ parts, drawings and lead times, only your team can explain. That page is usually missing.

Evidence“cmmc” 27,100 searches a month at $24.01 a click. On October 5, 2026, Google’s AI Overview drew on the DoD CIO, GSA, Microsoft and a university; the first page belonged to auditors, compliance software, a law firm and trade media.

04

Explain costs and the RFQ openly.

Buyers want to know what drives the price before they ask: setup, material, tolerances, finish and quantity. An article on cost drivers, with a downloadable checklist of what to send with an RFQ, brings inquiries that already fit.

EvidenceFor “injection molding cost” on October 5, 2026, eight of the thirteen sources in Google’s AI Overview were molders, mold makers and molding platforms, five of them based in China.

05

Reach skilled workers with the same content.

Job seekers search for pay, training and what the work is like, not for your company name. Articles that show what your people work on help sales and recruiting at the same time.

Evidence“welder salary” 27,100, “cnc machinist salary” 3,600, “machinist apprenticeship” 1,000 searches a month. In the AI Overview for “cnc machinist salary” on October 5, 2026, nine of ten sources were job boards and forums, one was a US metal fabricator.

Pitfalls and the law

What slows down manufacturing content.

A manufacturer’s article is advertising for its products and often touches labeling and export rules. These are the points worth knowing in the US. This isn’t legal advice; if in doubt, ask your lawyer or your export compliance officer.

“Made in USA” without the full story

An unqualified “Made in USA” claim means final assembly or processing in the US, all significant processing in the US, and all or virtually all components made and sourced in the US. Under the FTC’s Labeling Rule (16 CFR Part 323), a wrong label can bring civil penalties, and the same standard applies to websites, email and social media. If parts come from abroad, say so, for example “Made in USA of U.S. and imported parts”.

Controlled drawings in public posts

If you make parts for defense articles, the drawings, photos and instructions needed to produce them can be ITAR technical data. Releasing it to a foreign person counts as an export, even inside the US (22 CFR 120.50), and a public web page is open to everyone. Basic marketing information on function or purpose isn’t technical data. So describe capabilities in general terms and keep customer drawings, CAD files and process sheets out of blog posts, photos and downloads.

CMMC pages with an old status

Since November 10, 2025, DoD can put CMMC requirements into contracts, phased in over three years. After that, they apply to all contracts in which a contractor handles federal contract information (FCI) or controlled unclassified information (CUI) on its own systems, except for purchases of COTS items only. A page that still calls CMMC a proposal costs trust with defense buyers; Google already shows the question “Is CMMC now required?”. Claire suggests an update when an article loses positions.

Comparisons with competitors

Comparing processes, machines or shops is comparative advertising. In the US, the Lanham Act lets competitors sue over advertising that misrepresents their products or yours. Buyers do search for comparisons: an ad click on “xometry vs protolabs” costs $99.16. So give other suppliers’ specs and prices with a source and date, and check them regularly.

Questions

Good to know.

Is SEO worth it for manufacturers?

Yes, because a few of the right visitors are worth a lot. An ad click on “cnc machining services” costs $28.84 on average in the US, on “cnc machining quote” $55.69. The technical questions before an RFQ are searched far more often, and those are exactly the questions Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT answer. To do so, they draw on pages from manufacturers and suppliers, too.

How much does SEO for a manufacturing company cost?

With Claire, €199 a month on Starter and €299 with the full SEO strategy and AI tracking, cancellable monthly. Technical work on your website, like speed or structure, comes on top; your agency or IT team handles that.

Can we do SEO on our own?

You already have the know-how. What’s usually missing is time: engineers rarely write an article every week. Claire takes over research, drafts and publishing. Your team adds what only it knows as a note, for example the tolerances you hold or lessons from the shop floor, and approves every article before it goes live.

How long does it take for SEO to work in manufacturing?

Expect months, not weeks; young domains take longer. Inquiries follow later than visits, because industrial buyers decide slowly and as a team. So measure success by contacts and RFQs, not just by visits.

Will articles bring in “machine shop near me” searches?

Not directly. “machine shop near me” gets 90,500 searches a month, and Google ranks local results mainly by relevance, distance and prominence, based on your Business Profile. Keeping that profile complete is the foundation, and it isn’t something Claire does. Articles win the searches before and beyond your area: processes, materials, tolerances and costs.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. AI answers are built from web pages, and for technical questions they often cite manufacturers: for “type 2 vs type 3 anodizing”, seven of eight sources in Google’s AI Overview were manufacturers, finishing companies and manufacturing platforms (October 5, 2026). Being findable on Google and being cited by AI go hand in hand.

How do we get recommended by ChatGPT as a manufacturer?

The free AI check shows how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name your company today and whom they recommend instead. In Claire you then track it continuously in ChatGPT and Google AI.
